A Bit About Me

It all started with a little keyboard at the age of 3.  I would hear a tune on the radio, hum it, and play the melody by ear.  I was then introduced to formal piano lessons  at the age of 4. After completing my grade 8 RCM and a BSc in Biology, my passion for music led me to return to study music at the university level.  In 2013, I graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Music from McMaster University, specializing in piano studies, with a general foundation in piano pedagogy, arranging, choral music, and advanced music theory.  I also obtained a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary, which has been pivotal in equipping me to provide personalized music education to various ages and abilities.  My education and teaching experience in both a group and private setting have informed my teaching approach to develop well-rounded musicianship skills from a young age, in order to empower lifelong musicians to explore, create, and influence their world.  I believe a student needs to develop a broad foundation of skills, such as aural, sight reading, technical, improvisation, accompaniment, theory, and arranging, so that they can do much more with their skills than learn and memorize pieces. Students should also be able to connect their understanding of the world to music, in order to gain inspiration and enrich their musical skills.  A well-founded young musician can pick up a popular piece and play it by sight or using a chord chart.  Another student may be able to transpose a piece on the spot or rearrange it to give it their own creative twist.  Being able to recognize the effect of music on culture and vice versa is a powerful skill that can be used well to enjoy the art and influence the world around them for good.  The possibilities are endless! I love to share the happiness of piano playing with my students at all ages and levels, while challenging them to always strive for the next level of skill and proficiency. I strongly believe that any skill can be nurtured with love and patience.  No two students are alike and just like any art, each student has a unique potential to shine and express musical creativity.  My teaching approach allows flexibility within a structured learning environment to meet student needs and help them reach their goals.

Building well-rounded musicianship

Beginner to advanced piano lessons

I offer piano lessons for all ages and skill levels from the fundamentals to Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) level 8. Students are not limited to the RCM curriculum and lessons are tailored to student needs and goals.
Students will have opportunities to perform in recitals, masterclasses, exams, and festivals!

Piano Keys
Composing Music

Music Theory

Basic music theory is naturally embedded in piano lessons, as it is essential to learning to read, interpret, and play music.  However, as students progress from the basic rudiments, they move onto intermediate and advanced rudiments, which is taught separately.  I use either the Ultimate Music Theory or the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) curriculum.  Students can work towards the RCM theory exams to fulfill their personal goals, or to obtain high school credits.
